Bicycle Office

This was a design project in Introduction to Mechanical Engineering (ME 1). The goal was to pick a problem, design a solution, perform basic static analysis on it, and evaluate the design against its initial criteria.

Overview

The bicycle office was meant to combat a variety of issues I ran into while biking my freshman year: (1) I had no where to put my coffee, (2) I was always getting lost on campus and (3) I frequently forgot my bike light in my dorm room.

Personal Design Challenge

The challenge is to design a single bicycle attachment that can hold the user’s coffee, display the user’s phone during calls, and use the user’s phone flashlight as an emergency bike light at night. The product should be useable with a variety of bike types and should be easy and fast to install and remove. The target audience are bike commuters who frequently take calls in transit and usually have their coffee with them. The most important challenge will be to maximize safety and stability while maintaining a high degree of versatility, as it should not interfere with the natural motions the user takes when riding a bicycle. It will likely be difficult to standardize the product’s attachment mechanism with a variety of bikes, as the front handlebar shapes are very different and complex.
